Mold remediation is very expensive, but seems to me anyone with any decent handyman skills can at least do the demolition of the mold remediation. The whole article above wasn’t about anything except letting a professional do it. You didn’t mention any pros or cons of why having a professional is a good thing. You just said that you will be sorry if you don’t have a professional do it.

    Hi Drew,

Speaking from my own experience, I’ve seen many a decent handyman fail at doing a proper mold remediation. At one rental home I saw they had tried 3 times to remove mold. It worked, for a while, but the mold came back. The owner ended up being sued over the mold problem, not good at all.

I’ve also seen a few good handymen end up making themselves quite sick because they didn’t know the proper precautions to take around toxic molds. Being sick from mold exposure isn’t very pleasant.

Anyway, thanks for your input on this article. I probably should do another article on the pros and cons of professional vs. self mold remediation. I was in too much of a hurry when I originally wrote this article and I should do another one with more info.

Hello, my husband and two other partners own their own Mold Remediation business. I work for them on the marketing and accounting side of the business. That is why I can say a pro is best, I have heard alot of customer tales about dealing with the mold for years before they came to the realization that they needed someone with experience. This isn’t something that you can come in off the street and do, they have years of experience and not to mention, education.

But, I do want to say choose your pro wisely. There are some out there just trying to make a buck! Don’t hesitate to ask about the education, experience or references. My husband and his partners are proud of their acheivements and would be more than happy to show them off, anyone who honestly knows what they’re doing should be willing to.

If you are worried about the cost get an estimate, some placed even offer a discount if you use them for the remediation they will credit back your estimate. Plus the cost of the estimate will not cost nowhere near as much as if the mold keeps growing.

Also, testing is a good thing to do. Hire a mold inspector to do this for you. Some places do sell the “DIY” home testing kits, BUT the average joe does not know what he is looking for. Inspectors can collect the samples and send it to a lab and when he gets the report back from the lab he will know what you should do.

There is no way to give an estimate on a remediation job without actually seeing the job.

I agree that the cost depends on the actual job. While you can get some idea about the average cost of mold remediation just from local sources of information, each job is unique.
