This article is very biased towards professional mold removal. However, the only differences of a professional and a non-professional is knowledge and experience. I believe that the experience part of the equation can be forgotten if you do enough research on the type of mold you are dealing with and the reasons mold is growing. Mold grows in humid areas that reach a percentage of 70% or higher. If you take away the moisture in the air the mold will not grow. Its impossible. Get a dehumidifier and a few fans to place in the area the mold inhabited. Before scrubbing the mold wet it down with a detergent/bleach solution or straight vinegar (nature remedy know to kill about 82% of molds). This will keep the spores from spreading while you are removing it. Also, seal off the room your working in. keep it isolated from the rest of the residence to restrict the spore movement even further. Wear a respirator and protective clothing and you should be out of harms way. As long as there isn’t constructional damage I would recommend doing it yourself after researching and gaining knowledge. This is what mold removal companies had to do. You have a brain for a reason so start using it and quit letting bias articles scare you into wasting thousands of dollars.

    Hi DIY Pro,

Thanks for offering a different opinion.

The main reason I’m biased toward professional mold removal is that I’ve seen the DIY job botched a number of times. Sure, a pro can botch a mold removal job too but they’re usually legally liable for the quality of their work. This can be important if you’re selling a home or renting a home. I’d rather have a bonded professional mold removal expert be responsible for the work if there were potential legal ramifications involved.

For a smaller job that’s caught early and where there probably won’t be legal questions, the a DIY solution may make better financial sense.
